Long Haired German Shepherd Puppies for Sale: What to Know Before You Buy

Long haired German Shepherds have the same intelligence, loyalty and working ability as any German Shepherd, with a fuller coat, tufted ears and a plumed tail. They're also harder to find from a serious breeder, because producing long coats consistently takes careful planning.
At Haus-Neufus, long coats are our specialty. Here's what to know before buying a long haired German Shepherd puppy.
Long Haired, Long Coat, Long Stock Coat: Same Dog
You'll see all three terms. They describe a purebred German Shepherd with two copies of a recessive long coat gene. The SV, the breed's parent club in Germany, recognizes the long stock coat as an official coat variety, and long coats compete in their own classes at shows, including the Working Long Coat classes where our dogs have placed first.
How to Tell a Long Coat Puppy
Most breeders can identify long coat puppies within the first several weeks. Look for:
Tufts of fur inside and around the ears
Longer, softer, fluffier fur than stock coat littermates
Longer fur between the toes
A fuller tail

The full adult coat takes one to two years to come in.
What to Ask a Long Haired German Shepherd Breeder
Are both parents long coats, or long coat carriers?
Are the parents health tested, with hip, elbow and DNA results you can see?
Do the parents have show ratings or working titles?
How is the litter raised and socialized?
What warranty comes with the puppy?
Long Coat Temperament
Coat length doesn't change temperament. Bloodlines and breeding do. Our long coats come from German show lines bred for stable temperament, correct structure and trainability. Read more in West German Show Line German Shepherd Temperament: What Are They Really Like?
Do Long Haired German Shepherds Shed More?
Both coat types shed heavily. Long coat hair is longer and more visible, but many owners find it easier to clean up. See Do Long-Coat German Shepherds Shed More or Less Than Stock Coats?
