German Shepherd Breeder Near Me? A Guide for Families in Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and West Virginia

3 min read

Searching "German Shepherd breeder near me" doesn't always turn up what you're hoping for. Plenty of listings come up, but not many breeders with titled, health-tested parents and proven show results. For a lot of families in Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and West Virginia, the right breeder ends up being a few hours away in Ohio.

Haus-Neufus is in Johnstown, Ohio, about 35 minutes from Columbus. Here's how far we are from you, what to look for in any breeder you're considering, and how pickup works if you make the drive.

How Far Is Haus-Neufus From You?

Approximate drive times to Johnstown, Ohio:

  • Charleston, West Virginia: about 3 hours

  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: about 3 hours

  • Indianapolis, Indiana: about 3 hours 15 minutes

  • Detroit, Michigan: about 3 hours 30 minutes

  • Louisville, Kentucky: about 3 hours 30 minutes

For most families in these states, that's a one-day round trip. If you live in Ohio, read German Shepherd Puppies for Sale in Ohio or German Shepherd Puppies for Sale Near Columbus.

Is a Closer Breeder Better?

Not always. A breeder 30 minutes away is only a better choice if they meet the same standards. A German Shepherd will be with you for 9 to 13 years, so a few hours of driving is a small part of the decision.

Whoever you buy from, ask for:

  • Hip and elbow results on both parents

  • DM results on both parents

  • Titles and show ratings you can look up

  • A written contract and a health warranty

  • A clear answer on how puppies are raised and socialized

  • A breeder who stays in touch after pickup

If a local breeder checks all of those boxes, great. If not, it's worth the drive. Our 12 questions to ask a German Shepherd breeder works for any breeder in any state.

Visiting Before Pickup

Approved families who have placed a deposit are welcome to visit by appointment. Our puppies are raised in our private home, so we don't do open visits before a reservation. When you come, you can meet the dogs behind your puppy, since our breeding dogs live on the property with us.

Planning Your Pickup Drive

Puppies go home at 8 weeks. A few tips for the trip home:

  • Bring a crate sized for a young puppy, plus bedding and towels

  • Bring a leash, collar, water and a small amount of food

  • Bring a second adult if you can, so one person can drive

  • Plan short stops, and keep your puppy away from busy rest areas where unvaccinated dogs pass through

  • Plan a quiet first few days at home and book a vet visit for the first week

  • Submit a puppy application and schedule a phone consultation

  • Reserve with a $1,000 non-refundable deposit, applied to the price and transferable to a future litter

  • Pay the balance by 8 weeks of age

  • Pick order is based on deposit date and the type of home (pet, sport or working)
