West German Show Line German Shepherd Puppies for Sale: What to Know Before You Buy

4 min read

If you've decided you want a West German show line German Shepherd, you already know what you're looking for: a correct, balanced dog with strong pigment, a confident temperament and parents who have proven themselves in the show ring and on the training field. The hard part is telling a real show line program apart from a listing that just uses the words.

This guide covers what "West German show line" actually means, how to read the titles in a pedigree, what to verify before you put down a deposit, and how our program in Johnstown, Ohio works.

What Is a West German Show Line German Shepherd?

West German show lines are German Shepherds bred to the standard of the SV, the German Shepherd Dog club of Germany. In the United States, the SV system is carried on through clubs like the USCA and the GSDCA-WDA.

Show line dogs aren't judged on looks alone. Before a dog can be breed surveyed under the SV system, it has to:

  • Earn a show rating from a judge at a conformation show or breeding evaluation

  • Pass a temperament and obedience test (BH or BH-VT)

  • Earn a working title such as IGP1 and pass an endurance test (AD)

  • Have hips and elbows officially evaluated

  • Pass a breed survey (KKL), where a judge reviews structure, temperament and pedigree

That's the difference between a West German show line dog and a German Shepherd that simply has German names in the pedigree. The titles prove the dog was tested.

West German show lines are also different from American show lines bred to the AKC standard, and from working lines bred mainly for sport and police work. If you want to know more about the temperament side, read West German Show Line German Shepherd Temperament: What Are They Really Like?

How to Read a Show Line Pedigree

The letters before and after a dog's name tell you most of what you need to know.

Show ratings (before the name)

  • VP (Very Promising): the top rating in puppy classes

  • SG (Very Good): a strong adult rating

  • V (Excellent): the highest rating an adult can earn at a regular show

  • VA (Excellent Select): awarded only at a national Sieger show

Titles (after the name)

  • BH or BH-VT: companion dog test covering obedience, temperament and behavior in traffic

  • AD: endurance test, roughly 12 miles of trotting followed by a short obedience check

  • IGP1, IGP2, IGP3: working titles in tracking, obedience and protection, with 3 the highest

  • KKL: the dog passed the breed survey and is approved for breeding

Health and breed value

  • a1, a2 or Normal: official hip and elbow results

  • DM N/N: clear for the DM gene mutation

  • ZW: a hip breed value. 100 is the breed average and lower numbers are better

We explain the hip and elbow side in more depth in German Shepherd Hip & Elbow Dysplasia: OFA, SV Ratings & Health Testing.

What to Verify Before You Buy

Any breeder can say "imported German bloodlines." Here's what to actually ask for:

  • Both parents' names, so you can look up their titles and show results

  • Hip and elbow results for both parents

  • DM results for both parents

  • Recent show results, not just results from years ago

  • A written contract and a health warranty

  • Where the puppies are raised and how they're socialized

  • What happens if you can't keep the dog later in life

A good breeder will hand you all of this without being asked twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are West German show line German Shepherds good family dogs?

Yes, when they come from stable, tested parents. Every breeding dog in the SV system has to pass a temperament test, and we raise our puppies in our home with daily handling.

Can show line German Shepherds work?

They have to. A show line dog can't be breed surveyed without a working title like IGP1. Many of our dogs hold IGP2.

Do long coat German Shepherds compete in the show ring?

Yes. The SV recognized the long coat as its own variety in 2010, and long coats now compete in their own classes. Zitan, Zenzi and Sasa all earned their titles in long coat classes.
